Now, NBC is tanking in the US network race, and Nine pretty much is holding its own down here in the commercial network stakes.
Yet, I was struck by some interesting things they share in common.
- Both air a breakfast programme called Today.
- Difference: Nine’s has a male anchor who is an occasional drunk and full-time crazy. NBC only lets Matt Lauer have a personality on Thanksgiving Day.
- Both have a show that follows their respective Today with an aging cabaret star as a presenter.
- Difference: Kathie-Lee Gifford gets crunk on air. KAK gets crunk off air at Sydney Harbour, on air she does her best to embarrass her guests…unless they’re Poms.
- Both have a high-rating police shows about lurid crimes.
- Difference: Law & Order: SVU is a parody of a morality play; Underbelly is a Russ Meyer film masquerading as a TV series.

and there's more...
both have swishy gay men as part of the team of hosts
difference: sam champion handles the weather and richard reid handles hollywood gossip.
oops. i meant to indicate that i was describing the two "today" shows. but that was probably obvious.
Good addition!
Virtually all of the men on Today (Australia) are swishy, but Richard Reid is at the most unapologetic about it. (And that's a good thing!)
