Ok, I'm somewhat surprised by the operatic Claudia clone that is representing Slovenia.
I'm surprised with the La Bouche knockoff which is representing Poland.
I'm surprised and pleased with the more talented (in my view) Padar representing Estonia.
Yet what takes me by surprise is the French selection this year. Not a single ballad.
Even more shocking, these are mostly upbeat, modern, and clever songs, with a few that have a strong politically raised middle finger at the "I-Love-You, You-Love-Me" crowd.
Take a listen to the French entries over at esctoday.com.
Personal faves: Les Vedettes (I love a song that has the refrain of "Papa est mort") and Medi-T (how strange would it be for France to actually bring genuine reggaeton--not the Macedonian version--to Eurovision, eh Spain?)
