It's a rainy Friday morning and quite honestly the last thing I want to see is a bunch of frumpy heterosexual couples on the Today show getting engaged.
First off, let's just delve into the hypocrisy at work here. Gay couples can get married in Massachusetts (possibly even Maryland soon enough) and "civil unioned" in Connecticut and Vermont so you could at least include some. Don't give me that nonsense about a "makeover" ruse, because as many television shows before you have proven, men get makeovers as well.
Secondly, (and this pales in comparison to the first point) why don't any of these women say "no?" Odds are that somebody doesn't want to get married, so how come it's never shown on any of these live programs? I want to see some dejection and rejection! Not everybody wants to get married. Ask Joy Behar and several of the women in my family.
Finally, why on Earth do the men have to be the ones who propose all the time? It's the 21st Century, haven't gender relations progressed to the point where it doesn't matter who proposes?
At least Mother Nature agrees with me at the relative inanity of this whole Sweeps stunt.

And there are plenty who could use the help too. Not all gay men/women have that extra sumthin-sumthin that allows them to be fabulous. There are plenty of them who could benefit from professional (and kind) direction.....
That said, I believe it's just a matter of time before it's "ok" for networks to show happy, well-adjusted gay couples in an every day light.
Hopefully, sooner than later.
