Silliness of the idea aside, why are producers forgetting the differences between Broadway & Off-Broadway?

"american psycho" the broadway show seems kinda gimmicky to me.
anyway, how many movies have been successful as broadway shows (or vice versa)? the only one that comes to mind immediately is john waters' hairspray -- which was a movie, then a broadway show and then a movie of the broadway show.
i suppose you could count the disney movies/broadway shows, but disney is all about repackaging its material over and over in different iterations (each one with its own line of merchandise).
